Mercenary Audio P4 DMS compressor

Monday August 30, 2010. 05:44 PM, by Nantho Audio Hardware > Mercenary audio
Audio Hardware : Mercenary Audio P4 DMS compressor - pcmusicP4 DMS compressor is a new hardware compressor from FCS (Foote Control Systems). DMS stands for Dual Mono / Stereo and it is linked using true power summing.

It offers similar smooth control that FCS processors are known for, but is a departure from what they have done before.

This compressor has a definate sound of it's own. The audio path is a new design that uses transformer balancing on inputs and outputs and a discrete op amp in the output stages. As a matter of fact, the whole path is discrete except for the 8 top grade VCAs. 4 VCAs are used per channel to optimize noise and headroom performance. The VCA topology is based on an updated version of the dbx 202 design.

The audio path is extremely short....
Input transformer > VCA module > Discrete Op Amp > Output transformer.

The op amp is the excellent Scott Liebers SL2520 Red Dot, chosen for it's warmth and harmonic content. This op amp was designed to replace the highly sought after Melville op amps found in vintage consoles.

The transformers are Carnhill input and output transformers chosen for their unique sound. While these transformers are the type used in various Neve pieces, they are not trying to emulate Neve here. The sound is quite different, and has much higher headroom than typical Class A circuits can offer.

The P4 DMS is very warm and fat with harmonic content reminiscent of vintage gear.
