Audio Hardware : Tascam Portastudio 2488neo - pcmusicTascam's 24-track / 24-bit workstation has been upgraded to the 2488neo. The updated model has a bold new look and new mastering effects to create punchy, polished mixes. Like its predecessor, the 2488neo has eight microphone inputs, seven effects processors, a 80GB hard drive and the simple user interface common to all TASCAM Portastudios.

The 2488neo features an 80GB hard drive, enough for hours of 44.1kHz/24-bit recording. The eight microphone inputs, four with XLR and phantom power, can be assigned to any track for recording large ensembles. A reverb effect, multi effect with guitar amp simulation, and up to 9 compressors are also included. The new mastering effect includes multi-band EQ, compression and limiting for professional-sounding mixes which can be burned to CD or transferred to computer through the USB 2.0 jack.

Plug-ins : SoundHack Delay Trio - pcmusicSoundHack has released Delay Trio, a collection of three plugins that Tom Erbe developed as class demonstrations while teaching computer music and studio technique at UC San Diego. All of these are derived from the same basic delay algorithm: a hermite interpolated delay line with variable modulation, and a feedback loop with dc blocking and saturation. Pitch shifting is achieved with a dual head crossfading delay (ala Eltro Tempophon/Dennis Gabor/Pierre Schaeffer phonogene) and is decidedly low-fi. The saturating feedback also allows them to be great drone and noise generators.

The three plugins are :

• +delay (classic delay effects).
• +pitchdelay (essentially the same plugin with controls oriented toward pitch shifting).
• +bubbler (a granular delay in which grains are pulled from the delay line with randomized start time, delay time and pitch shift value).

These plug-ins are available for Windows (VST, RTAS) and Mac OS X (VST, RTAS, AU); all are freeware.
