Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter & Ableton Live

An interview with Daft Punk' Thomas Bangalter, about his use of Ableton Live software. Interview, translation by our friend Patrick Wack from Ableton .
    How do you use Live?

    Anywhere, anyhow. I use it on my laptop as a notepad for remember and experimenting musical ideas, as a personnal computer game because I have more fun with it than most videogames, and in the studio for Daft Punk projects, tracking sessions, jammings, remixes, scoring and sound design.


    What do you like most about Live?

    Live is by definition one of the most transparent and simple creative software I have ever used. Its interface is strimlined and its features, though with a minimal approach, offer endless possibilities. The whole process is easy, simple, and fun, yet with accessible possible sophistication and professional results.


    How did you first learn / hear about Live?

    I jumped on the live users bandwagon around the release of Live v2.0. "Elastic audio" were the words that got me in !


    How about the new features in Live 4.0? How about the new features in Live 5.0?

    The Operator is one of the best soft synth, and I hate soft synth in general...also the delay adjustment in ms was very very much needed. Its getting better and better.


    Do you use Live in any unusual ways?

    One of the thing I prefer in Live are the proprietary Ableton FX plugins. They are amongst the warmest software FX. Sometimes I will import a Pro Tools track in Live just to bounce it with the FX to make it sound more warm and more crispy or dirty (I love dirt). I am not a big ReWire fan so I do it really the old school way, importing and exporting the sound files.


    Do you have any favorite trick or tip that you'd like to pass along?

    "The rule is there are no rules !" That is definitely the case for such a freedon piece of software that is Live.




    What other equipment / software do you use in conjunction with Live?

    The Universal Audio 2192 interfaces, a ProTools HD1 standard, and an old Mackie 1202 (first generation ever produced - pre-VLZ). Plus a few old FX units and synth. But I tend to minimalize my setup, and Live helped me do it.


    How do you use Operator? What do you like about it?

    It's great because its got its own thing, it is not trying to emulate this or that. I am still in a trial phase, as I use always a software for a few month, so that it becomes invisible to me before really starting creating stuff with it.


    Any other comments about Ableton Live?

    I wish there would be an "import movie" feature like in most of its competitors. We work more and more integrating film and music, ...scoring, and I use ReWire right now to integrate Live with a movie file. I wish I could di it without ReWire.
